Renovation and Retrofit of Existing
Social Housing
As announced in Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal Government will invest $1 billion to renovate and energy retrofit social housing to help vulnerable Canadians with needed improvement to their homes while creating spin off jobs in construction and other industries. This will improve the quality of life for residents of these communities by keeping their homes safe and affordable and it will ensure these homes will continue to be available to meet the needs of future generations. Of this amount, $850M will be used for existing social housing projects administered by Provinces and Territories, which are in receipt of annual Federal funding. To ensure that work can begin quickly, this new funding is being delivered through existing arrangements with the Provinces and Territories under the Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI). Under AHI, Provinces and territories are required to cost-share this funding on a 50-50 basis and are responsible for program design and delivery. The remainder of the $1 billion, $150 million is being used for existing federally-assisted social housing projects funded and administered by CMHC. Off-reserve federally funded and administered social housing projects currently subject to an operating agreement with CMHC under a National Housing Act social housing program will be eligible to apply. Eligible work will include repairs, modernization, additions and improvements and regeneration/redevelopment, energy upgrades or conversions, and housing related modifications to provide support for persons with disabilities. For more information on how to apply visit www.cmhc.ca/housingactionplan, or contact CMHC by phone at 1-800-668-2642. |
